FOG HORN      MIDSUMMER NIGHT

MIDSUMMER NIGHT

A lemon dessert sauce that's great served over hot gingerbread or French toast.

It was the last year they floated logs down the West Branch to the paper mill in Millinocket that I met Miss Addison. It was early spring and I was trying to get over a bad case of Cabin Fever. I'd put in about a mile below Rip Dam and had worked my way down to First Debsconeag. I was just drifting along with the current when I saw someone waving to me from shore, holding up a coffee cup and dressed in odd clothes. She was wearing what looked like a man's wood suit coat, but instead of trousers she was wearing a matching long black skirt that reached right down to her ankles. Her shirtwaist was white with the color held in place by a black cameo brooch. And she was old. I couldn't help but wonder what in the name of Sam she was doing way out here.

Turned out that Miss Addison was a retired teacher of English literature spending her last years enjoying the beauty of New England. I got to say she was doing it right. She'd rigged a camp table and it was covered with a pink cloth. There were early wildflowers on the table in a tin can. Her bedroll was laid under her overturned canoe, all dry and comfortable looking.

I had my coffee. That first night she served it with hot gingerbread with lemon sauce. I also had two wonderful days with a lovely lady listening and learning. At night around the campfire she recited Shakespeare. The characters came alive. I could see them in the wood smoke.

When we parted, Miss Addison pressed a small worn book into my hands; Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream. It is now my treasure, as it had been hers. I never saw Miss Addison again. But, I remember. Oh, how I remember!

Gozintas:

  • 3/4 cup water

  • 2 T. cornstarch

  • 16 oz. can frozen lemonade - thawed out

 How to fix:

  • IN a small pan, gradually STIR 1/4 cup of the water into con starch until smooth.

  • STIR in the rest of the water and the lemonade.

  • Bring to BOIL over medium heat while stirring constantly.

Prepare an instant gingerbread mix in your Dutch oven or reflector oven. When done, spoon the lemon sauce on top.

Enjoy your dessert around a flickering campfire. Gaze into the spiraling wood smoke and open your senses to the fragrances and sounds about you. What can you remember?
